Agri-Food and Bio-Industrial Innovation Program (ABIP)

The Agri-food and Bioindustrial Innovation Program (ABIP) is designed to support the creation and advancement of technologies that address key challenges in Alberta’s agri-food and bio-industrial sectors. The program aims to help lower costs, improve productivity, increase competitiveness, add value to agricultural and forestry-based products, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Funding Amount

Up to 75% of total eligible costs to a maximum of $500,000.

Eligible Applicants

Applicants can include:

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 500 full-time employees and less than $50 million in annual gross revenue
  • Industry associations
  • Research and development organizations
  • Post-secondary institutions
  • Government research labs

Applicants must be incorporated with current corporate filings. While applicants do not need to be located in Alberta, they must demonstrate a strong benefit to the province.

Eligible Activities

Projects must:

  • Support the goals of the program
  • Begin at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3 to 7 (higher levels may be accepted in certain cases)
  • Include structured phases with key decision points
  • Be completed within a 36-month timeframe
  • Meet any additional criteria set by Alberta Innovates
