Critical Minerals Innovation Fund (CMIF)

The Critical Minerals Innovation Fund (CMIF) is a $5 million initiative aimed at advancing innovation and economic development within Ontario’s critical minerals sector. The program is designed to strengthen the province’s domestic supply chain through support for research and development activities.

Funding Amount

Successful applicants for the Critical Minerals Innovation Fund (CMIF) may receive up to 50% of eligible costs up to $500,000.

Eligible Applicants

  • Lead applicant must be a private company.
  • Project must involve collaboration with at least one of the following:
    • Public academic or research institution
    • Non-profit organization
    • Industry association
  • If the project includes multiple partners, one organization must:
    • Act as the lead, and
    • Be responsible for managing the funding.

    Eligible Activities

    Projects must meet the following criteria:

    • Be carried out in Ontario.
    • Focus on developing or commercializing innovative technologies, techniques, or processes that support key areas such as:
      • Battery supply chain development
      • Deep mining and exploration
      • Mineral recovery
      • Advancing innovation within the critical minerals sector
    • The project cannot receive funding from any other Ontario government program.
