Electric Vehicle (EV) ChargeON Program

The EV ChargeON Program, launched by the Government of Ontario, provides funding to expand public electric vehicle charging infrastructure in smaller and rural communities across the province. The goal is to improve EV charger availability in underserved areas, reduce range anxiety, and enable more reliable long-distance travel

Funding Amount

  • Municipalities and Indigenous businesses: Up to 75% of eligible costs.
  • All other applicants: Up to 50%, with a maximum of $1 million in funding.
  • Funding is capped based on charger type installed:
    • Level 2 (3.3–19 kW): Max $5,000 per port.
    • Level 3 (20–49 kW): Max $15,000 per port.
    • Level 3 (50–99 kW): Max $50,000 per port.
    • Level 3 (100–199 kW): Max $75,000 per port.
    • Level 3 (200 kW+): Max $100,000 per port.

Eligible Applicants

  • Must operate in Ontario and fall into one of the following:
    • Small or medium-sized businesses
    • Not-for-profit corporations
    • Municipal governments
    • Indigenous communities, organizations, or businesses
    • Broader public sector organizations
  • Must own the installation site or have written approval from the property owner/Band Council for at least 5 years of operation.

Eligible Activities

EV charging station sites must:

  • Be publicly accessible 24/7
  • Include one of the following:
    • Four Level 2 ports
    • One Level 3 and one Level 2 port
    • Two Level 3 ports
    Use appropriate connector types:
    • Level 2: SAE J1772 standard
    • Level 3: At least 25% CCS connectors; other allowed types include CCS, NACS, and CHAdeMO
    Be located in a community with 170,000 people or fewer or in an Indigenous community in Ontario.

Eligible expenses include:

  • Capital expenses
  • Professional services
  • Rental or leasing costs
  • License fees and permits
