Industry Commercialization Associate Program (ICAP)

The Industry Commercialization Associate Program (ICAP) offers funding to high-growth, high-potential small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to hire a skilled technical expert. This expert—referred to as the Industry Associate—helps the company bridge the gap between research and market readiness, accelerating product commercialization and boosting business readiness levels.

Funding Amount

  • Up to 75% of the Associate’s salary to a maximum of $120,000 in non-dilutive funding
  • Funding amounts will be determined by the Associate’s experience and education level.

Eligible Applicants

Applicant Eligibility:

  • Must be a legal corporate entity with current filings.
  • Incorporated in Alberta or registered extra-provincially in Alberta.
  • Structured as a General, Limited, or LLP and registered in Alberta.
  • Meet SME criteria (under 500 FTEs and <$50M in revenue).
  • Must have a significant presence and intent to operate primarily in Alberta.
  • Limit of two active Alberta Innovates-funded associates per company.

Associate Eligibility:

  • No conflict of interest with the applicant; must be at arm’s length.
  • Cannot own more than 15% equity in the company.
  • Cannot be a returning associate or have been employed by the applicant in the last 12 months.
  • Must submit a letter of intent to participate and live in Alberta during the project.

Eligible Activities

Eligible Projects:

  • Should align with program goals and fall within TRL 3–9.
  • Must be completed within one year.
  • Subject to additional criteria as defined by Alberta Innovates.

Second-Year Funding Eligibility:

  • The associate must continue to reside in Alberta.
  • Progress report confirms meaningful contributions.
  • Project continuation must be approved by the applicant’s TDA.
