Mitacs Elevate

Mitacs Elevate supports collaboration between industry and academia to tackle pressing business challenges using innovative research. In Ontario, preference is given to projects in the following sectors:

  • Health Sciences and Technology
  • Clean Technology
  • Digital Media and Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Finance
  • Automotive

Funding Amount

Eligible organizations may receive a total project budget of up to $60,000 per year over two years, split equally between a $30,000 Mitacs grant and a $30,000 company contribution.

This amount includes a $5,000 stipend for the fellow and up to $5,000 for expenses such as research supplies, equipment, etc.

Eligible Applicants

A partnering organization is eligible if it meets the following:

  • Is Canadian or has a Canadian subsidiary
  • Will use the research directly
  • Has a site where the fellow will spend at least 50% of their time
  • Is either:
    • A for-profit company earning less than 50% of revenue from government, or
    • A qualified not-for-profit such as an economic development organization, charity, or industry association

Eligible Activities

Projects must address a Canadian challenge. Examples include:

  • Identifying barriers to employment for blind Canadians and finding ways to increase job access
  • Designing themed video games/apps for a theatre festival to attract new audiences
  • Developing a pilot to support stroke victims returning to work, helping reduce recovery time and speed up reintegration into the workforce
