Offered by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Invest North Program supports economic development in Northern Ontario by encouraging businesses to pursue transformative projects. The program is designed to enhance productivity, innovation, competitiveness, revenue, export readiness, and both job creation and retention in Northern communities.
There are six distinct funding streams under the Invest North Program, each with its own set of eligibility requirements and criteria tailored to different project types and applicant profiles.
Covers up to 50% of eligible project costs, to a maximum of $500,000 for R&D-only projects, or up to $2M for combined R&D, demonstration, and commercialization efforts.
Provides up to 50% of eligible costs, up to a $1M limit, as a conditional contribution for the project’s duration.
Offers up to 50% of eligible costs with a funding cap of $200,000.
Three options are available:
Provides conditional contributions, or a mix of loan and grant, depending on assessed economic benefits to Northern Ontario, with a cap of $5M.
Covers up to 50% of tile drainage costs, to a maximum of $1M:
Private companies alone or partnered with academic/research institutions.
Colleges, universities, and research institutions in Northern Ontario.
New businesses opening in Northern Ontario.
Established businesses expanding in Northern Ontario.
Companies setting up new operations in Northern Ontario.
Non-profits, agricultural, or community groups delivering tile drainage projects on behalf of a consortium.
Supports R&D, technology demonstrations, and commercialization. Eligible expenses include labor, prototyping, testing, IP, and R&D services.
Activities must align with the research institution’s strategy, include a private partner, and focus on problem-solving or commercialization in Northern Ontario.
Cover costs related to establishing, expanding, or relocating businesses:
Eligible land includes new or existing acreage; eligible costs are for contractor fees and project admin.
