The Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), delivered by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), is a federal initiative that helps Canadian innovators speed up their R&D activities. The program is mainly geared toward companies pursuing process improvements through research, but it also supports broader technology adoption projects that build new technical capabilities.
Contributions of up to 60-80% of internal technical labour and subcontractor expenses towards a specified innovation project.
Applicants must be incorporated, profit-driven Canadian small or medium-sized businesses with 500 or fewer full-time employees. They should be focused on scaling their operations by developing and commercializing innovative, tech-driven products, services, or processes.
Funding supports the development of new or improved products, services, and processes. Projects must address an internal technical challenge, typically through the development or adoption of new technology or process improvements.
