Poultry and Egg On-Farm Investment Program (PEFIP)

The Poultry and Egg On-Farm Investment Program (PEFIP) is a federal grant initiative designed to support poultry and egg producers in adapting to the impacts of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Through this program, up to $647 million in non-repayable funding will be distributed over 10 years to eligible producers. Funding supports projects that aim to boost productivity, enhance operational efficiency, meet shifting consumer demands, and strengthen on-farm safety, biosecurity, or environmental practices.

Funding Amount

  • Most applicants may receive up to 70% of eligible project costs.
  • Young Producers (those 35 or younger as of Jan 1, 2021) can receive up to 85% coverage.
  • Allocations include:
    • $347.3M for chicken producers
    • $76.9M for turkey producers
    • $134M for egg producers
    • $88.6M for broiler hatching egg producers

Eligible Applicants

Applicants must:

  • Be a legal entity able to enter agreements
  • Hold quota or production shares as of January 1, 2021
  • Be one of the following:
    • Poultry/egg producers with quota
    • Producers licensed by a provincial marketing board
    • Hatcheries in Atlantic Canada
    • Participants in new entrant programs using loaned quota or leased farms with quota

Includes:

  • Chicken, turkey, and egg producers
  • Turkey breeders
  • Broiler hatching egg producers

Eligible Activities

Projects must align with one or more of these goals:

  1. Boost operational efficiency or output
  2. Improve food safety or biosecurity measures
  3. Enhance sustainability on the farm
  4. Respond to evolving consumer expectations (e.g., animal welfare, organic practices)

Fundable activities may include:

  • Hiring expert consultants to improve efficiency
  • Building or upgrading infrastructure
  • Purchasing/installing eligible equipment and assets
  • Converting housing systems
  • Staff training for implementation

Examples of Projects:

  • New barn construction
  • Equipment upgrades (lighting, heating, ventilation, etc.)
  • Installing energy-efficient or sustainability-enhancing systems
